Race categories
& Handicaps

So what categories of boat are available? Remember this is an event for eight oared sweep boats only. Each year the race categories are reviewed. All masters crews and mixed eights are handicapped. From 2005, the Rowing Scoring system will apply to the race categories formally called Intermediate (now "B") and Novice (now "C"). The school categories will remain unchanged.

There are also a number of prizes awarded.

Average age of crew is 50 years of age or more, no minimum age for individual rowers. The coxswain may be of either gender, and any age.

Masters crews and Mixed Eights handicaps:

Masters and Mixed Eight crews shall be placed in the age category corresponding to the average age of the crew attained DURING the current year. The following handicaps are based on the Australian Masters handicaps. The 1km handicap is multiplied by 8.6km, which is the measured distance of the HOY course.
