Risk Management

As an essential component of its risk management strategy the organising committee of HOY has defined a policy to meet the extremes of heat possible on regatta day.

  • Instructions issued to competitors include information on fluid replacement and heat exposure.
  • Safety boats are stationed along the course of the race with officials briefed re emergency procedures including ambulance access. The boats carry a supply of cold water to assist rowers if required.
  • A first aid station staffed by St John Ambulance is situated at the race finish. Experienced medical officers are available to provide an assessment and treatment as necessary
  • At a temperature of 34 degrees Celsius all rowers 16 years of age and under are withdrawn.
  • At 38 degrees Celsius – all rowing ceases.
  • At temperatures 34-37 degrees Celsius rowers over 16 may compete unless the Heat Index exceeds 35 on two successive readings 15 minutes apart. The Heat Index is determined taking into account temperature ,wind and humidity. Appropriate equipment is on site to determine the Heat Index.
